CEDYNIA - a town situated in the province of West Pomerania, in the Gryfino district, is the seat of the commune of Cedynia. In the 7th - 6th century B.C., in the area of contemporary Cedynia, a borough of Lusatian Culture was established. In the 9th - 12th century, there was built a borough guarding the river Oder. On the 24th of June 972 the army of prince Mieszko I and his brother Czcibor defeated the margrave of the Eastern March, Hodon, and count Siegfried of Walbeck. The military success of Mieszko I ended the German plans of conquering the West Pomerania, which was inhabited by Polish tribes. In 12th - 13th century Cedynia was a residence of a castellany. In 1252 the town was taken over by the Germans. The town got the municipal rights in 1299. In 1402 - 1454 the town was taken over by the Teutonic Knights. In the 17th century the town was destroyed by the Swedes. In 1701 Cedynia was occupied by the Prussians. After the World War II the town was reclaimed by Poland.
